The RCD works hard every day to help farm, ranch and urban landowners improve groundwater recharge through various techniques that slow, spread and sink rainwater back into our groundwater basins. One recent example is located on the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve in Cambria where the RCD and partners repaired a gully that was being washed away by high velocity runoff. The project consisted of a series of log check dams installed along the gully to slow down the water and allow it to infiltrate into the soil. This not only arrests erosion but enhances groundwater recharge. Re-introduced native vegetation was also used to permanently stabilize the site and further slow, spread and sink rainwater. The check dams are an innovative technique designed to gradually decay and provide nutrients to the soil over time. More information can be found at http://us-ltrcd.org/projects/.
